Cortex - Troupeau Bleu
I bought this from Searchers in Melbourne in 2022 after hearing the track Mary et Jeff pumping through the shop. I plucked up the courage later to ask the guy what was playing. He was so thrilled to discuss this 70s French jazz fusion act I'd never heard of. I left briefly and then ran back and bought the album. It's now become one of the favourite records I own.

This is a 2020 repress and sounds great. If you fancy a first press there is one going for $2333 on discogs from France right now. Be quick!

Cortex started with two guys Alain Mion & Alain Gandolfi who look like the guys from my dad's old meteorology VHS tapes. What really makes this album is the voice of Mireille Dalbray (wife of Alain Mion). Think Flora Purim style vocals. Mireille apparently died shortly after this albums release. The other subsequent albums don't quite hit the same.

Skipping across a lake

This band is like peak 90s grunge in the modern day.

It's easy to forget that the band that brought us Tubthumping are actually full on, woke as fuck, antifascists.

Chumbawamba - The Day The Nazi Died

https://youtu.be/OLkPwxcIji0

We're told that after the war the Nazis vanished without a trace
But battalions of fascists still dream of a master race
The history books, they tell of their defeat in '45
But they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died

They say the prisoner at Spandau was a symbol of defeat
Whilst Hess remained imprisoned and the fascists, they were beat
So the promise of an Aryan world would never materialize
So why did they all come out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died?

The world is riddled with maggots; the maggots are getting fat
They're making a tasty meal of all the bosses and bureaucrats
They're taking over the boardrooms, and they're fat and full of pride
And they all came out of the woodwork on the day the Nazi died

So if you meet with these historians, I'll tell you what to say
Tell them that the Nazis never really went away
They're out there burning houses down and peddling racist lies
And we'll never rest again until every Nazi dies

This morning I was reminded of this, and yep, it still holds up as a 100% solid gold banger.

Just logged my 56th album on my "2026 New Listens" list on Record.Club. I joined the site to force myself to listen to new music and prove to Spotify that I don't just listen to the same 5 artists over and over again

... and I've just realised that I'm no longer on Spotify after a successful trial of and move to Qobuz. Rate paying artists far higher than receiving the often-weird Spotify Wrapped

By the way, I've just discovered Swans. All my friends listened to them in Uni and I'm trying to understand why I never picked them up

I just discovered the 80s glam metal revival scene and I am in awe. There's so much of it and it's all good.
