A bleak, dark, and paranoid dose of #postpunk #synth for last spin of the night.

This is their third record, and one that takes a step forward in the outfit’s evolution.

It still sounds apocalyptic as hell with its drum machines, black hole vocals and icy synths (a’la Suicide, This Heat, Cabaret Voltaire, etc…), but this one adds a few different things into the mix, integrating live drums and guitars, and some saxophone, harmonica, and flute as well.

Picture a nightmarish, terrifying dance party full of hot, sad goth chicks and dead inside #darkwave dudes.
This is playing at that party.

To be honest, I’m stealing this record, LEAVING that party with it, and LEAVING each and every one of those sad sack motherfuckers to sort out their own shit alone.

Horslips - Dancehall Sweethearts

I finally managed to go to Lenny's Records in Adelaide today. I only bought records from the British Folk section. Including this...definitely not British...album.

I've been meaning to get some Horslips on my shelves for a while. This is their third album, from 1974. A mixture of Irish folk and proggy seventies rock. Cool.

The cover tells us, 'Believe it or not these tracks have traditional airs concealed about their persons.' Apparently, the album is based on the travels of an 18th Century blind harper. The record company made them come up with a more contemporary title and cover to hide this fact.

I-Roy - Crucial Cuts

Nothing dates this 1983 compilation as much as the word Crucial in the title. Its days as a hyperbolic adjective have long passed. You have to say it in Delbert Wilkins' voice. Crucial. Now you try it. Crucial.

A compilation of the mighty I-Roy's seventies work, pressed on possibly the shittiest vinyl in existence.

I picked this up in a little second hand record shop in Whitechapel Road in the late 80s.

I'm going to start bringing the word crucial back into use.

It’s getting to be FULL BLOWN Autumn on the island now, and when the weather is what it was today, I tend to start diving HARD into Pink Floyd.

Tonight is definitely a Meddle night.
I believe that this is one of the easiest Floyd albums to revisit. It’s definitely the one of theirs I’m taking to the Desert Island (sorry, Dark Side, but thems the breaks).

It’s always gonna be my go-to Floyd record, particularly around THIS time of year.

“Fearless” still blows my mind after all these years, and what’s left to say about “Echoes” that hasn’t already been said?

Disclaimer:
I can do without “San Tropez”. For me, it’s one of the most asinine songs Waters has ever written, but after all these years, I’ve come to accept its existence and place on this otherwise flawless record.

Le Noise

Have been thinking about listening to this all day while out and about town taking care of some things.

Hands down, one of my three favorite Neil Young albums.

There’s a magic about Le Noise.

Daniel Lanois’ production approach to this is nothing short of remarkable.

This is nothing but Neil singing and playing electric guitar, and by using distortion, echo, delays, feedback and other processing, Lanois transforms the performances into something otherworldly.

Neil’s guitar sounds so massive, and with all the sonics going on around it, it makes for a wonderfully noisy (and riffy) album indeed.

For me, it’s essential listening in Neil’s catalog, regardless of era.

When I took this out to play it, I forgot about the DVD inside that came with it.

These are going for stupid $ right now.

Roni Size & Reprazent - New Forms

This came out just four months before our son was born. He had terrible cholic and screamed the house down for at least the first three months of his life. One of the only ways to get him to settle was to play him this. Loud.

As such, it’s an album that comes with such a high emotional load for me, it's now hard to be objective about it.

I haven’t actually sat and listened to it for decades until now. Man, it’s good. So good.
Easily in my top ten albums of all time.

The sticker on the front says it's a Mercury Music Prize nominee - it went on to win it. I can remember the Radio 4 morning news people trying to explain to listeners what Jungle was. One of them described it as the sound of cutlery in a tumble drier. I like that.

For me, this album also marks the transition from Jungle to DrumNBass.

When playing music live, it's a big help if the venue and techs know exactly what your project needs. We can convey this information through a #rider - a document that lists requirements, input and output channels, and a drawing of the projects positions on the stage (a stage plot).

It's actually easy to create a channel input list for your #band or #music project. Put your channels in this order:

Drums:
Kick, snare, high hats, high tom, mid tom, floor tom, overheads

Bass
Electric guitars
Acoustic guitars
Keys
Sampler/tracks/horns/etc
Vocals

Everything should be ordered from left-to-right as the front of house tech sees them (stage right to stage left) - with the exception of the toms which will be right-to-left for a right-handed drummer.

The other day, I posted a great compilation of #60s Japanese Group Sounds bands (the one with Godzilla on the cover), and it drove me downtown to pick THIS one up and give it a try.

The Spiders are here (GREAT BAND!), as well as some killer songs by The Playboy, Cougars, and The Burns.

The only bummer is this; due to length, there are five songs that appeared on the original CD that do not appear here.
These are the things that happen when you’re dealing with unofficial bootleg records.
Would have been nice to get a complete version spread across 2xLPs, but cost effectiveness wins again, I guess.

Great record otherwise.
