    ANDY WHITE
    Rave On Andy White
    1986 Germany pressing

A bit of a Friday “power of suggestion” post.

I think it was @ironmanrecords who posted this not too long ago, and I was very pleased to see it. It reminded me that it’d been a while since I heard it.

If you’re unfamiliar with Andy White, he is an incredibly talented Northern Irish poet, author and singer/songwriter who wields a familiar and comforting brand of -y rock.

Rave On was his very first full-length, and since then, has put out a SLEW of exceptional records.
He’s worked with TONS of notable artists and musicians over the years, including Peter Gabriel, so that should give you a clue as to how well respected he is.

Melodic and understated acoustic storytelling of the highest quality. His voice is never overpowering or theatrical, just gentle and conversational, like he’s telling you and you alone a story directly.

This song is interesting because it starts out one way and you expect a pretty standard pop track, then by the end of the chorus it turns into this funk soul type groove, pretty awesome.

            TORTOISE
            Touch
            2025 U.S. pressing

Great way to get my Friday going, & one of my absolute favorite records of last year.

To me, it’s always astonishing when a band makes what very well may be one of their best records so deep into their career.

Tortoise has been at it so long, and for my own personal tastes, I haven’t been much of a fan of what they’ve been doing their last few records.

To me, Touch is right next to the albums that made me fall in love with them in the beginning. Records like Millions Now Living Will Never Die, the self-titled, and TNT.

There’s a sense of cinematic adventure here, and for me, interstellar miles more engaging than their last record The Catastrophist. The members of Tortoise live in three different U.S. cities now, which changed their process of developing songs.

More of whatever that process is, please.
Worth every bit of your time.
            Wonderful record.

The intro guitar and base lines are so fast and high energy and then the put on the breaks and it gets boring. For me it would be so cool if they kept the energy from the first few seconds going.

At the top level it is Mussorgsky's emotional journey as he walks around an exhibition of artwork by his recently deceased friend Viktor Hartmann. But there are captions for most/all of the works, so it is also a recursive tale with stories within stories. 🙂

Some of the original art is lost, so the musical renditions are all we have left. 🙁

Waking up and spending all my time
Infecting people, baby, I could be that way inclined
There's something so insidious in lies
The ones made to disgust the world all dressed up as divine
In their mission
In their decisions
No recognition
Of what they can't define

I am not a pathogen
You cannot breathe me in
It's just all I'm feeling
I am not a pathogen
A blessing not a sin
Distrust is all you're feeding

Ingmann was a cool guitar player.
Starting with playing in the 40s, he also developed his own recording equipment which made it possible to record his bat-shit crazy guitar sound.

He also was the head of the Danish (no thanks I had a donut with breakfast) branch of the Metronome label.

Musically, though, he’s most remembered for his cover of “Apache” (originally recorded by The Shadows), & to a lesser extent, a song called “Dansevise”, a song which won he & his wife Grethe the 1963 Eurovision contest.

He had many more hits in Germany, but let’s not spend any more time on the Germans.
                                                                They know what they did.

I’ve mentioned numerous times on here that I developed my love for classic country and western as a kid from my uncles.
My Uncle Alfio was the one responsible for first playing me Tex Ritter, and Blood On The Saddle was ground zero.

The title track is one of the great songs of all time.
It is simultaneously grisly and horrific, but also unbelievably hilarious. Not written by Ritter, but certainly popularized by him.

The album takes off from there, and your smile never wanes until the record’s over.
