TIL that the earliest evidence of a stringed instrument in Europe was found in High Pasture Cave on the Isle of Skye in Scotland, and is the charred remains of the bridge of what is believed to be a lyre. Led Zeppelin I was released in 1969. The iconic band's iconic cover depicts the infamous Hindenburg disaster (1936), "one of the most famous disasters in aviation history." The disaster killed 36 people.

32 years ago was just 1994. Led Zeppelin was making light of a famous event in living memory. A possible reason they used this cover is all of the members of the band were born 10ish years after the disaster. They recorded and released their smash-hit album when they were in their mid-20s. The rock-and-roll musicians were probably not too interested in social norms either.

If Led Zeppelin I were released today, it might have a photo of TWA Flight 800 (1996), a gruesome midair explosion that killed 230 people. Yet not many disasters have captured the public imagination the way the Hindenburg did.

A better comparison may be Chernobyl (1986) - farther back in time, but larger in our minds. Chernobyl killed about 45 quickly, and some argue it killed about 10,000 more over time due to radiation.

One of the more wonderful musical stories of the past few years, and thanks to my good friend Jason Flower, this incredible record has finally seen the light of day, 60 years later.

Back in ‘68, in the town I now live on Vancouver Island, some young teens cut an acetate at the Nanaimo Sewing Centre of incredible #garage #Psych songs.

The band didn’t go anywhere, and the tape was lost.
Until Marcus Pollard found it in a thrift store between Port Alberni and Tofino.

He didn’t know what it was, WHO it was… nothing.

He posted about it, dug deep, until an actual member of the band replied to the post.
Zoom in and read it.

My pal Jason at Supreme Echo (also the name of his wonderful store), then put it out after lovingly & meticulously bringing it back to life.

Great record, great story.
