Ed Sheeran saying yesterday he isn’t an “activist musician“ and his fans saying they’re not interested in politics in music is like watching scenes of genocide on your tv screen and sticking your fingers in your ears and going “la la la”. In today’s world more than ever you can’t just ignore what’s happening.

Marking John Coltrane’s 100 birthday this week here’s his 1961 epic Olé, which is inspired by “El Quinto Regimiento”, a song which celebrates the anti-fascist 5th Regiment during the Spanish Civil War. (I was originally going to link to his magnificent “Alabama” but this one is even more on the nose).

I remember being asked by a BBC reporter in 1997 about whether our research on computational simulation of musical expression would put musicians out of a job. The answer was no and not because what we were doing wasn’t very good mimicry. Simulation is circus act, always less useful than it is insightful (or momentarily entertaining). We had good reasons to be doing what we were doing, but they were empirical rather than generative. And also more crucially our work (and most work in our field) demonstrated repeatedly that what you could simulate wasn’t what made a performance sound human - it was the residuals (which weren’t just random noise) which were individual to the performer and interesting to the listener.

Fell down a rabbit hole of reading about Aadam Jacobs and his increasingly sophisticated recordings of live bands in Chicago. aadamjacobscollection.org/

The recordings are available and really good listening. But really I just sorta fell in love with this persons intense passion for live music. Best one I’ve heard thus far: archive.org/details/ajc02077_t

In the mid , there was a bit of a garage rock revival, of which The Shoutless were very much a part of.

It was flavored with a little , some rock, as well as some classic 50s rock n roll.

It’s still a pretty obscure record today, but fully worth your time and exploration.

This was their (difficult) third album. It is a CD/CD-Rom digipack with pages and pages of art and lyrics. In hindsight, they were struggling to live up to the utter brilliance of Barí. There are, however, some really great moments to be had here.

My partner, being an avid Kurosawa fan, introduced me to his work when we were dating. I remember watching this film years ago but my memory was patchy (like a dream eh). Kurosawa doesn’t hold back – I’ll make the most beautiful scene of flowers and a rainbow with a little boy needing to gut his stomach for the fox spirits to make amends for childhood curiosity. The peach orchard scene is one of the most stunning pieces of cinema. Harrowing PTSD war flashbacks /survivor guilt and the final scene about humanity, capitalism and nature are as relevant today as it was then.
I woke up this morning still thinking about the film. So I put this on, which seemed perfectly fitting following Dreams, with it’s own themes of loss, transcendence and overall hazy vibe.

(You wouldn't believe the shite that gets inside a CD player over 30-odd years. It's pretty amazing.) It plays again now. So it's back to the CDs.

We'd recently moved into this house, a short walk from Mr V's record shop (still mainly CDs in those days), and I thought I'd treat myself (22 fucking dollars!!).
